Modern house plans – what makes a good home?

Planning your new home is an essential step to obtaining your dream modern house. But what makes great modern house plans? What makes a great contemporary home?

You need to start with what YOU want to get out of this home. You’ve decided to go for a modern style, but there are many variations within this. Do you want truly cutting-edge design that will stand out as very contemporary, or would you rather have a modern twist on a classical style house? Is the main purpose of this home to provide an enjoyable and practical living-space for your family, or a stylish bachelor pad? You need to keep these things in mind when choosing your plans, and not get carried away with a plan that won’t fulfil your needs.

  1. Price
  2. What material would you like it built of? This is a way of showing a truly modern edge to your design, glass and steel are often used in modern plans.
  3. Number of rooms and how they flow together. Modern house plans are often very open-plan, and you need to decide whether this will work for your family. For example, I like having a kitchen that I can have a child-proof gate across the entrance to prevent my 1 year old entering the kitchen at will!
  4. How will your house fit in with your lifestyle? Questions to consider are do you entertain a lot (dining room important?), do you have guests to stay often (in which case an en-suite to the guest room would work superbly)?
  5. Do you have a feature on your building site that you wish to incorporate or a great garden to enjoy? A large deck from French windows, or a balcony on the master suite may help you to appreciate a great view of the city or mountains!

While you’re considering these things, write down your wish-list and have a look at the following sites, all of which offer great modern home plans. Hopefully you can find your dream home in these plans and start on a build that will change your life…
